A book for: Parents of children aged 2 to 12 years old

happychild's Review

John Cooper shows parents how to teach kids social skills and problem solving skills and how to help children learn about feelings. The book is divided into three main sections: Changing Your Child's Behaviour, The First Social Skills and Teaching Your Child Important Life Skills. We think the section on Feelings is especially useful as it contains advice about teaching children to recognise their feelings and recognise the feelings of other people; both of these are fundamental building blocks for building Emotional Intelligence skills in your child. The book also contains helpful ideas for teaching your child to listen well, take turns and share, greet other people and be appropriately assertive. Written by a Sydney-based clinical psychologist, this book is clearly written and is rich with ideas for parents who want to raise their preschool and school age children with strong social skills and a foundation for emotional wellbeing. Highlights/Quotes

"Interactions with other people are possibly the most difficult areas of life for many children. Research shows that the most effective time to help children learn to regulate their emotions is between the the ages of three and seven...This is when brain connections which put the brake on the emotional period of the terrible twos are laid down. Of course we continue learning through the rest of our lives, but if we can teach children the basics in the early years we are giving them a good start."
